Nickelodeon greenlights something that's EPIC
Avatar: The Legend of Korra

Sweet. There was never a "Book of Air" season for The Last Airbender, so hearing about this continuation is pretty awesome. Can't wait for it.

Imitate anime. Milk until cow is thoroughly drained :V

I'm super stoked for this. Even though the intended audiences are from 4-13 I enjoyed the original series greatly. My dad is also a fan of the series. Thanks for sharing.

Anime? Haven't seen much recently due to lack of interest. Avatar's a better show to watch than most animes by my reckoning. Way more fun and animated.

Granted, given how PG feels about franchise decay, I totally get the sentiment. A more interesting and daring leap of creativity would be to leave well enough alone and start a whole new (better?) show! Exciting!

Well that show just has so much potential. Its a whole world, there's plenty of possibilities for new stories without it getting old. I don't think they're milking it more than is acceptable. A better example of a cash cow being milked dry is the Shrek franchise.

Who cares if the art style resembles or emulates anime?  Is that a bad thing to begin with?  Anime is a beautiful (when done well.  There is plenty of "real" anime that not only sucks but is also hideous...  at least Avatar looks good.) style that I think should be more prevalent in the west.

Besides, it's the content that matters.  Avatar is a good show, regardless of the art style.  =p

Or Sonic the Hedgehog, for instance, but that's another discussion. The point is sequels almost always tend to be not as great as the original, whether because of too much (bad) change or not enough (good) change. That the rules may be technically different for an entire show, sure; but things tend to degrade over time. It happens sometimes. Whether or not it happens to Legend of Korra I can't give a damn yet, because it's still a year away. Better to wait and speculate what we'll be seeing.

The article mentions the existence of a technologically advanced steampunk city where Korra would eventually go. That's probably going to be the most interesting distinction from The Last Airbender: more high-tech. Since we already saw a lot of bronze- and iron-age technology in the latter, like iron submarines driven by waterbending and Fire Nation tanks, it's logical to assume we'd see more extravagant leaps of industry in 70 years. Except it may be more mechanical technology than bending technology, what with this "anti-bending" movement that's supposed to take place. Any thoughts on what kinds of characters or subplots we'll be seeing in this advanced steampunk age?

Watching Avatar reminds me of the feeling of going to a cafeteria eating Fruit Rings in a bowl of Malk; I know what it's trying to be, but it looks different and tastes worse.

I don't think Avatar's narrative is particularly good either (I've seen 16-bit sprite comics with better storytelling, and that's pretty close to the bottom of the totem pole), and would prefer the studio to try something original. Hell, they're decent enough at the actual animating that if they tried another style and story, I'd give them another shot.

At least CT's programming has been picking up Nick's slack. I feel like I'm in Bizarro World :V

EDIT: They're adding steampunk?! That's soooooo....fanfic.net.

Re: Nickelodeon greenlights something that's EPIC
You'll have to fill me in on what web comics you've read. Avatar's funny, gets me laughing, and keeps me drawn to the characters and their struggles as they travel the world. That it isn't dark, complex, snarky, or thought-provoking doesn't cross my mind much, since the show is far more fun to watch than most of the anime I've seen. That's partly why I lost interest in anime: the style has its own overarching cliches that I've grown tired of, and in its place I like to find examples of excellent animation and competent storytelling in American studios. There are plenty of good animes, but none so nicely animated and pleasantly entertaining as Avatar. Plain and simple. Anime's bored me, Avatar takes cues from it and makes a pleasant show to watch.
